Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project is located in Eastern Iceland on glacier fed rivers Jökulsá á Dal and Jökulsá í Fljótsdal. The storage reservoir is retained by 195 m high concrete faced rockfill dam (CFRD) and two saddle dams (35 and 52 m high). The project involved 50 & 10 km TBM-excavated headrace tunnel, two 550 m inclined pressure shafts terminating in an underground powerhouse with an installed capacity of 690 MW located in the Fljótsdalur Valley. Inclined shafts and powerhouse work was performed under a separate contract.
