Tarbela Dam, with 149 million m3 fill volume, is one of the largest earth and rockfill embankment dams in the world and is 143 m high with a crest length of 2,743 m. Upon completion of 4th Extension works, Tarbela HPP will have 17 units and 4,888 MW installed capacity.

Tarbela 4th Extension works is funded by the World Bank and valued at USD 928 million, and involved raising of Tunnels 3 & 4 intakes; construction of 2 x 13 m Ø shafts, penstock and manifold, intake gate equipment, trash racks and construction of a powerhouse connecting to existing Tunnel 4. Works included installation and commissioning of 3 units, each with 470 MW installed capacity.
